Another indication of the troubles ACT Government has had with active travel comes from a report tabled earlier this year for the two financial years up until COVID-19. The active travel work was behind schedule.
The FY 2019-20 was way behind on bike lanes, and last year was not any better.
“The directorate also missed last financial year’s targets, with the 2018-19 annual report finding there was only a 6km increase in bike lanes in the year, well off the 25km target.”ACT’s bike lane targets missed despite active travel push, The Canberra Times, 22/2/2020
Back in February 2020, it was also behind on paths.
“It is also failing to create community paths on target, currently 46 per cent behind its rolling target.”ACT’s bike lane targets missed despite active travel push, The Canberra Times, 22/2/2020
Fast Track only added 3.5 km of strategic bike paths to the cycling network. The Belconnen Bikeway was originally due for completion in 2019. The section along Emu Bank was first completed in late 2020.
Update 6 February 2021 Belconnen Bikeway
The construction along Emu Bank is completed. However, the construction of the section promised at the 2016 ACT Election along Benjamin Way has not yet begun.
