Black Mountain Peninsula closed

Closure of a major bike path for resurfacing.

A massive gap has opened up in the Canberra cycling network now that the Black Mountain Peninsula bike path will be closed from 21-30/09/2020 between the underpass at Lady Denman Drive through to the West Basin. (Pedal Power ACT).

Success! You’re on the list.

How much further is it?

  • A detour from Lake Burley Griffin (interchange) around the north of Black Mountain to Civic adds 9km to the journey if you stay on a bike path.
  • A detour from Lake Burley Griffin (interchange) south around the lake to Civic adds 7.5km to the journey if you stay on a bike path.

North or south route?

The direct path is closed from Monday 21/09/2020 for resurfacing.

The detours between these two points are not short. Riding south around the lake is the shortest.

Working out the best route

You are going to have to think about your options. The CyclOSM view of the Canberra cycling network may help. The areas impacted are Molonglo Valley, Weston Creek, Belconnen, West Belconnen. Those living in the Woden Valley will likely take the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge and be therefore unaffected.

What to do? Take a look at this map first for the overview. Komoot is good, too. Extra travel time is to be expected. Enjoy!

Might of been better if they did this in stages rather than closing off the full area for 10 days (30/9 is actually a Wednesday, not Friday).
It seems concerning that they are doing West Basin area where they are starting a big redevelopment soon and existing paths are likely to be ripped up or damaged. I hope the left hand is talking to the right hand here…
