Federal Election in the air: $132.5 million for light rail

Light Rail Stage 2A. ACT Government

Light rail stage 2 has a secure future now that Federal Government funding is forthcoming. When the Federal Government starts promising money for infrastructure projects, you know that a Federal Election is around the corner.

Pork-barrelling belongs to any Federal Election. The last two ACT Elections has seen the Liberals hurt on light rail. The Federal Libs have a change of heart and are now supporting light rail with funding. The light rail through the parliamentary triangle has been held up due to approvals. Having the Federal Libs onboard essential for the light rail’s success.

pork-barrel: involving spending large amounts of money in an area in order to make local people more likely to vote for a particular person or party

Andrew Barr is a happy man. He has found an ear on the hill. The light rail stage 2 is expected to cost $1.9 billion, so there is plenty that the Federal Government can do to help. It is hard to imagine how much the Federal Government is prepared to invest in infrastructure projects, particularly roads, but a good indication is provided by the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan. The billions provided to Sydney and Melbourne make the light rail look inexpensive.
