To navigate Canberra, you will need the right map that is both current and suitable for your type of biking. Mountain biking requires special maps. City cyclists prefer paved surfaces and require good maps that show rideable paths, including bike paths.
Once the suburb is built, its design is set in stone. A coherent network of continuous bike paths across the city needs a master plan for bike path infrastructure, upon which new suburbs can be designed and realised so that the new infrastructure interconnects. Suburb design starts with the end in mind. The suburb is a small unit of the much larger and longer endeavour, to build active travel networks across the city.
A direct off-road bike path south from Belconnen via Whitlam to Denman Prospect is missing. Good bike routes are direct. Riding to Coombs from Belconnen is anything but that. Butters Bridge was originally proposed for bikes. Currently, we are sitting it out until John Gorton Drive Bridge is completed.
An alternate route to Gungahlin, away from the cars. This would be the safe and better approach. Here is one possible route that follows the Federal Highway, EPIC and Well Station Track to reach Gungahlin.
The list of missing links is long: route and tracks that could be opened for recreational biking. We can thank the Canberra Centennial Trial for opening a lot of the ACT commonwealth land for recreational use. Majura Pines to Kowen Forest is not far as the crow flies but the Majura Military Training Area blocks the way.
