The missing link between Kuringa Drive and Barton Highway has been discussed since at least 2016 and now tied with an intersection upgrade. Construction was not started until 2021. ACT Labor’s promises are worth little if nothing gets done over the parliamentary term.
The inability to shift transport investment away from roads is a concern. We cannot build our way out of congestion. We cannot break this cycle despite all the evidence to the contrary. The transport investment in 2020 has not changed. Most of the money will be spent on roads.
So much money is spent on roads. Here is a comparison of the investment in road improvement (duplications and widening) with other forms of transport. As cyclists, we are interested in bike paths but the light rail is included, too.
The duplication of Gundaroo Drive was completed and the bike path, part of the CBR Cycle Route C7, rebuilt. The old path was destroyed by the road widening work. This also happened with the Flemington Road path.
A bike network is more than the sum of its parts. Small gaps can greatly decrease the popularity of the route. Missing links is a term that describes gaps in the cycling network, and those gaps can be quite short.
