Play spaces are popping up all over Canberra. Canberra.bike provided a guide to play spaces and this is now updated in this post. A recent announcement by Chris Steel in May 2020 reminded us that there is more to come. Some were already in last years budget but a few have been brought forward as a result of COVID-19 playground closures. There is good news here for everybody.
Play Spaces, the large playgrounds that are so loved, are becoming more common. They are a great destination for a ride. The ACT Government is investing millions in them as part of urban renewal. Canberra.bike recently discussed Austroads recommendations for 30km/h speed limits on local streets. Many local streets are barely wide enough for two cars to pass and without community paths. Despite this, the speed limit is 50km/h on local streets in Canberra. If a child gets injured, the motorist’s apologies are not likely to help either the child or the family – or the driver. This is the problem of vulnerable road users. Collisions are often fatal.
Duplications are a common occurrence in Canberra. Now William Hovell Drive has its turn. This is a “shared story” from The Riot ACT.
The construction of Heysen Street has finally been announced. This project has been discussed for many years, and was promised by ACT Labor at the 2016 Territory election, and again in the 2019 Federal election.

It is one of the quirks of Canberra that while we have a territory government, the ACT Government is not responsible for all the ACT. Canberra is more like Rome and in the centre is Vatican City. Here we call it the Parliamentary Triangle, and it is ruled by the National Capital Authority (NCA). The domain of the National Capital Authority is bigger than one would think as it includes everything 200 m around the edges of the Parliamentary Triangle and Lake Burley Griffin itself. The National Capital Authority is the protector of the sacrosanct.

The Sulwood Drive bike path came to my attention during the last federal election. The ACT Government and an elected Federal Labor Government pledged $5.8 million for active travel infrastructure. One of these projects was the Sulwood Drive bike path in Kambah.
The Active Travel Infrastructure Practitioner Tool is embedded in the ACT urban development process. The general public, local residents and other stakeholders have a vested interest in new developments in the ACT. It is, however, difficult to find answers to what are sometimes simple questions. Urban development is a large machine that by necessity must serve the professionals and commercial partners, but Canberrans as residents and are important too. These two groups are separated by both language and knowledge.
